An emotional reaction to using or even thinking about utilizing technology is known as technology anxiety. The level to which the idea arouses fear and other negative emotions varies. Technophobia, the aversion to sophisticated technology, is a component of digital anxiety.

In today's society, technology anxiety is quite widespread. No matter their age, some people find that the introduction of new technology and its existence in every aspect of their lives causes them to feel uneasy and tense though this is generally more common among older adults because they are slower to adapt to new technology then younger children and adults. Although it may seem like a recent development, records of technology anxiety date all the way back to the early industrial age.

There are 2 social and cultural causes for technology anxiety, doomsday scenarios, and mass hysteria, that will be explored in further detail below.

Most individuals who have seen movies like The Terminator or ones with other doomsday scenarios have thought of a million ways the world may end. From robots obliterating people to implanting chips in our bodies to firing missiles at the earth and destroying it. The fear of new technology has been increased by all these portrayals about technology gone bad.

Digital anxiety can also be brought on by speculations about what a certain technology is capable of. For instance, many individuals experienced anxiety as a result of the Y2K panic and its idea that technology would malfunction as we entered a new millennium.

Refusing to purchase a new phone or computer, criticizing new technology or changes, refusing to use computers, ATMs, or card readers, resisting updating a device's software, and refusing to use any automatic processes, like automatic withdrawals to pay bills, are some symptoms of technology anxiety. If you have any of these symptoms, there is nothing to worry about because there are simple solutions to help you overcome this.

The best and easiest solution to overcome this is to find someone who does not have technology anxiety to help. Whenever you are facing a new technological device or software, have that person with you so that they can talk you through it, help you understand how to use it and be there for you. Make sure that the person you choose to help you is someone you trust and enjoy spending time with so that you feel comfortable around them and you can spend a lot of time working with them to overcome your technology anxiety.
